Thursday, August 10, 2006Kitty.My cat is coming to work with me tomorrow. My cat is coming to work with me tomorrow because our building management told us yesterday afternoon that they are going to be fumigating the building tomorrow. While I'm extremely grateful that I have a job to which I can bring my cat, and a boss wonderful enough to allow me to leave her here while I go to work at the massage clinic (and okay, pretty damn tickled that Bella gets to come to work with me), I am very, very not okay with the way this was handled by my building. And here's why: 1. Something like the fumigation of a 9 story building is not planned on the spur of the moment. There is really no earthly reason that they couldn't have given us a little more notice. Many of the people who live there travel, and may not ever be aware of what is happening when it happens at the drop of a hat. 2. In order for the fumigation to be properly effective, or something like that, we have to empty all of our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and wash them out with hot soapy water. I've lived in several places that were fumigated, and never had to actually empty the cabinets. Leaving them open was always enough. It is a big pain in the butt to empty all of our cabinets, and is not something easily done in just a few minutes. Again, more notice would have been nice. 3. Emptying the cabinets means having to refill the cabinets. And since, presumably, all of our dishes (which will be piled all over the kitchen and dining room) will be exposed to the chemicals that they use to exterminate with, all of the dishes will have to be washed before they can be put away again. We don't have dishwashers in our building. Time. Energy. Big pain in the ass. Once again with the more notice. 4. We're informed that, within this sort 48 hour or so window, we should empty our cabinets and wash them out. We are, however, given no information whatsoever about the possible ramifications of filling our building with noxious fumes. This is kind of a big deal for me. I mean, its one thing to be put out by having to do extra housework. Its another thing entirely to have one's health put in danger. Do we really need to wash all those dishes? Should we put our plants outside? Do we need to get out of the building, or stay out until a certain time of day? What about pets? The building allows cats, and I know it has at least one dog. Do we need to get them out as well? I'm making a lot of wild guesses here about taking Bella to the office with me and washing extra dishes because I'd rather do a little extra work than come home to a dead cat and then contaminate my dinner. I find it wildly inappropriate for them not to mention things like that in conjunction with a notice about a full-building fumigation. Posted at 1:58 PM ::
